Blog for Chris Knox: Videos, interviews, new website, new album and a show
Chris Knox is a pivotal figure in the New Zealand music, film, video, comics and general underground art scene. Earlier this year, he suffered a stroke and is still recovering from the effects of it. As a response, fans and friends recorded some of his many songs, written and performed over 30+ years as a solo artist, in bands such as The Enemy, Toy Love, The Nothing and as the Tall Dwarfs with Alec Bathgate (my preference). These generous recordings are to be released on an album called (appropriately) ”Stroke - Songs for Chris Knox”.
If you like his songs (like me) or just curious then buy this album. It features luminaries such as Bill Callahan (Smog), Yo La Tengo, David Kilgour, Will Oldham, The Mountain Goats, Shayne Carter, and heaps more covering a selection of his finest and most heart-felt tunes. The proceeds from its sales go to his continued recovery.
Information about the album, photos (all but one of the photos in this post are sourced from here), a message board, artefacts, Roy’s blog, and a form to upload your very own Chris Knox cover can all be found on this spanking new CMS-driven website.
To compliment the album release, NZ-on-Screen have curated a collection of his music videos, documentary footage and interviews. Roger Shepherd (founder of Flying Nun records) and Russell Brown (former cub reporter for Rip-it-up magazine) provide their well-informed views to complement this must see package.
There is also an album release gig featuring Dimmer, David Kilgour, Don McGlashan (and other folk with non “D” names) at the Kings Arms (Auckland) on November 20th. If you’re in Auckland then there’s no reason not to be there.
Stroke - Songs for Chris Knox is out on Monday November 16th. However, you can pre-order it at Amplifier right now for a measly $22.95, like I just did.
